The MAX6639 can monitor its own temperature and the temperature of either one or two transistors connected externally as diodes; such transistors are typically integrated into CPUs, FPGAs or GPUs. The 2-wire serial interface utilises the standard System Management Bus (SMBus™), supporting write-byte, read-byte, send-byte and receive-byte commands to read temperature data and set alarm thresholds. Temperature data can be read at any time via SMBus, whilst three programmable alarm outputs are provided to generate interrupt, disable or high-temperature shutdown signals. The MAX6639 is available in 16-pin QSOP and 16-pin low-profile QFN, 5mm × 5mm packages. It operates from a supply voltage of 3.0V to 3.6V and consumes only 500µA of supply current.
