Supply ADI Multiplexers:Analog/Digital/Fault Protected Multiplexers

Shenzhen Mingjiada Electronics Co., Ltd. is a company specialising in the distribution of electronic components. With extensive procurement channels and a wealth of supply chain management experience, we are committed to providing our customers with high-quality electronic component supply services.

Multiplexers are core switching devices in signal chain systems; their primary function is to select multiple signals for transmission to a single bus, thereby enabling acquisition, routing, testing and control. Leveraging its iCMOS® process technology, ADI has developed a comprehensive range of multiplexers, categorised into three main types: standard analogue multiplexers, digital multiplexers and fault-tolerant analogue multiplexers. These cover applications such as industrial data acquisition, ATE testing, automotive electronics, automation equipment and instrumentation. The different product categories vary significantly in terms of signal bandwidth, on-resistance, voltage rating and power-off safety features.

I. ADI Analogue Multiplexers

Standard analogue multiplexers are used for continuous analogue signal switching and support bidirectional signal transmission; they are the mainstream choice for data acquisition boards and sensor multiplexing. Typical series include the ADG706, ADG707 and ADG1208, with channel configurations available in 4:1, 8:1 and 16:1 single-ended, as well as 4-differential and 8-differential configurations.

Key features: low on-resistance, low charge injection and low parasitic capacitance, ensuring minimal distortion when switching weak analogue signals; support for single-supply and dual-supply wide-voltage operation; some models feature anti-latch protection and high ESD protection; switch timing follows a ‘break-before-make’ sequence to avoid the risk of channel short-circuits.

Applications: Industrial multi-channel thermocouple and pressure sensor data acquisition, audio signal switching, and portable measurement equipment.

Limitations: No built-in high-voltage fault isolation. When input signals exceed the power supply rails or the system loses power, high-voltage signals may flow in reverse into the downstream ADC and operational amplifiers, potentially causing device burnout. Therefore, these devices are not suitable for harsh operating conditions where front-end signals may be subject to wiring errors or surges.

II. ADI Digital Multiplexers

Digital multiplexers are designed for routing high- and low-level digital signals, with an emphasis on logic-level switching; they are not suitable for the transmission of precision analogue small signals. Their design objective is the reliable transmission of digital logic; they offer higher signal bandwidth and have less stringent requirements for on-resistance and charge injection, prioritising level matching, switching speed and noise immunity.

Key features: Compatible with mainstream 3.3V/5V digital levels; fast switching speed; high channel isolation; simple control logic; commonly paired with FPGAs and MCUs for I/O expansion and bus selection.

Applications: On-board logic signal routing in automated equipment, digital channel switching in test fixtures, and GPIO expansion.

Limitations: Poor signal linearity; unable to handle continuously varying analogue signals; lacks high-voltage fault isolation capability; prone to crosstalk and damage to downstream digital chips when overvoltage is introduced at the front end.

III. ADI Fault-Protected Analogue Multiplexers

The fault-protected variants represent an advanced solution within ADI’s multiplexer range, designed for high-reliability applications. Representative models include the ADG508F, ADG509F, ADG438F, ADG528F and ADG5404F, which are specifically engineered to address issues such as overvoltage, incorrect connections and power-off surges; they are also a key consideration in industrial and ATE project selection.

Core Principle: Utilising a proprietary series N-P-N MOSFET protection architecture, the channels automatically enter a high-impedance isolation state in the event of abnormal power-up, power-down conditions, or significant input overvoltage. This prevents high voltage from propagating to downstream circuits, eliminating the need for additional external clamping diodes or current-limiting resistors, thereby simplifying the BOM and PCB layout.

Key Performance Highlights: Withstands sustained input overvoltages ranging from –40 V to +55 V; the channel maintains a high-impedance state under power-off conditions, with leakage current at the nA level; features an anti-latch design, unaffected by power supply sequencing irregularities; in the event of a fault, the output of the enabled channel is clamped within the power supply range, protecting downstream ADCs and operational amplifiers; retains the excellent signal linearity, low RON and low charge injection of analogue multiplexers, balancing protection capability with signal quality.

Applications: Remote signal acquisition in industrial field settings, ATE (Automated Test Equipment), robot sensor interfaces, in-vehicle signal acquisition, outdoor measurement and control modules, etc.—scenarios where signal lines are prone to accidental connection to high voltage, or where electrostatic discharge and wiring faults may occur.

IV. Key Considerations for Selecting Three Types of Multiplexers

For applications involving only digital logic and requiring high-speed I/O switching, digital multiplexers should be prioritised; for routine, low-risk analogue acquisition where signals are stable and there is no risk of high voltage, standard analogue multiplexers should be selected; where on-site cabling is complex, human wiring errors are possible, long-distance transmission is required, or power-off safety is essential, ADI fault-protected multiplexers must be used. Fault-protected models can replace standard analogue multiplexers, but come at a higher cost; trade-offs should be made according to requirements during the design phase.

VI. Application Summary

ADI’s three categories of multiplexers form a tiered solution: standard analogue multiplexers focus on cost-effective, precision signal switching; digital multiplexers facilitate the expansion of logic signals; whilst fault-tolerant multiplexers enhance system robustness through built-in isolation protection, reducing the need for external protective components. Relying on a stable supply chain, Mingjiada Electronics provides a one-stop solution for this series of devices, from sample development to mass production delivery, meeting the signal chain design requirements for projects such as automated equipment, instrument testing and industrial data acquisition.
