Supply and Demand | Isentek IST8310 Three-Axis Digital Magnetometer – The Core Sensor for High-Precision Electronic Compasses in Quadcopters and Drones

I. Why Can’t Quadcopters Do Without a Reliable Magnetometer?

In multi-rotor drone systems, the magnetometer (electronic compass) is often the only sensor on the flight control board capable of providing absolute heading information. When GPS signals are obstructed or suppressed amongst city buildings, inside warehouses, or in environments with strong electromagnetic interference, drones rely on clean azimuth data to maintain their heading. Should the magnetometer experience hysteresis, drift or noise interference, the aircraft may, at best, experience heading oscillations; at worst, it may lose control entirely.

The IST8310 three-axis digital magnetometer, launched by iSentek, is a high-precision AMR (anisotropic magnetoresistance) sensor specifically designed to address this core challenge. This chip has been officially integrated into the driver support of the two leading flight controller firmware systems, PX4 and ArduPilot, and is widely used as an external compass in the Pixhawk series of flight controllers.

II. Analysis of the IST8310’s Core Technical Specifications

The IST8310 utilises a 3.0 × 3.0 × 1.0 mm³ 16-pin LGA package and is a highly integrated three-axis digital magnetometer chip. It incorporates three-axis magnetic sensing elements, digital control logic, a built-in temperature compensation circuit and self-test functionality.

Package: 16-pin LGA (3 × 3 mm)

Compared with commonly available magnetometers such as the QMC5883L, the IST8310 offers significant advantages in terms of sensitivity and resistance to saturation. In Holybro’s comparison document on built-in magnetometers for flight controllers, the IST8310 is noted for its wider magnetic flux density range (±1600/±2500 µT), which makes it less prone to saturation in environments with strong magnetic interference, rendering it more suitable for FPV drones and high-load multirotor platforms.

III. Core Applications in Quadcopters and Drones

The IST8310 has a broad and well-established application base in the drone sector. Both major open-source flight control platforms—PX4 and ArduPilot—have incorporated official driver support for the IST8310, enabling it to function as an external electronic compass for the Pixhawk series of flight controllers.

Electronic Compass and Heading Measurement: By measuring the strength of the geomagnetic field, the IST8310 provides drones with precise heading (yaw) information. Its high-sensitivity AMR technology and low-noise design minimise heading angle errors; when combined with the hard-iron/soft-iron calibration algorithms in the flight controller, it effectively compensates for magnetic interference from the airframe and outputs stable heading data.

Flight Controller Navigation and Attitude Fusion: In the attitude reference systems of multirotor and fixed-wing drones, the IST8310 is often used in conjunction with an IMU (accelerometer + gyroscope) to enhance heading accuracy and system stability through sensor fusion algorithms. For drones equipped with RTK GPS, the IST8310 can also serve as a magnetometer backup, acting as a redundant reference when the dual-antenna GNSS system provides GPS heading, thereby ensuring the reliability of the navigation system in complex electromagnetic environments.

Modular Integration Solutions: The IST8310 is widely used in various external compass modules for drones. For example, the CUAV IST8 compass module (weighing only approximately 5 g) incorporates the IST8310 sensor and supports Pixhawk, CUAV V5, PX4 and APM interfaces, connecting to the flight controller via an I²C bus. Furthermore, products such as the LOCOSYS HAWK A3e dual-frequency GNSS receiver and the Holybro mosaic-H RTK GPS module also incorporate the IST8310 magnetometer to enhance the stability of UAV positioning and navigation.

IV. Current Supply and Demand Situation

The global magnetometer market is experiencing sustained growth. According to data from market research organisations, the global magnetometer market size is estimated to be approximately US$3.94 billion in 2025, projected to reach US$4.32 billion in 2026, and is expected to grow to US$8.84 billion by 2034. This growth is primarily driven by the increasing demand for high-precision navigation sensors from drones, satellites and autonomous vehicles.
