I. ISO7721 Product Overview

The ISO7721 is a high-performance dual-channel digital isolator launched by Texas Instruments, forming part of the ISO772x series. This device utilises dual-capacitor silicon dioxide (SiO₂) insulated-gate technology. Whilst isolating complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) or low-voltage CMOS digital I/O, it offers high electromagnetic immunity and low emissions, whilst also featuring low power consumption. The two channels of the ISO7721 operate in opposite directions (1 forward / 1 reverse), making it suitable for industrial and automotive electronics applications requiring bidirectional signal isolation.

Isolation rating: Up to 5,000 V RMS (DW/DWV packages) / 3,000 V RMS (D package)

Surge immunity: Up to 12.8 kV

The ISO7721 has an expected service life of over 30 years at an operating voltage of 1.5 kV rms, with a typical current consumption of just 1.7 mA per channel at a data rate of 1 Mbps, combining the advantages of long service life and low power consumption. The device has also been certified to DIN EN IEC 60747-17 (VDE 0884-17), UL 1577, IEC 61010-1, IEC 62368-1, IEC 60601-1 and GB 4943.1, and provides ±8 kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge protection.


Furthermore, Texas Instruments offers the ISO7721-Q1 automotive-grade version, which complies with the AEC-Q100 standard, has a device temperature grade of 1 (–40 °C to +125 °C), an HBM ESD classification of 3A and a CDM ESD classification of C6, making it suitable for automotive electronics applications.


III. Typical Application Areas

Thanks to its high data rates, enhanced isolation and excellent EMC performance, the ISO7721 is widely used in the following scenarios:

Industrial automation: PLC isolated communication, fieldbus interfaces, digital I/O isolation

Motor control: Isolation of gate drive signals to ensure electrical isolation between the power stage and the control stage

Power supply systems: Isolated power supply feedback, power management communication

Photovoltaic inverters: Signal isolation between the high-voltage side and the low-voltage side

Medical Equipment: Signal isolation compliant with the IEC 60601-1 safety standard

New Energy Vehicles: BMS (Battery Management System), on-board chargers, and OBC (On-Board Charger) isolated communication


When used in conjunction with an isolated power supply, the ISO7721 effectively prevents noise currents on data buses such as RS-485, RS-232 and CAN from damaging sensitive circuits.
